St Margaret’s College launches Year 11 curriculum as a foundation for future learning and growth

Date: 14th October 2021

St Margaret’s College will be launching a new curriculum for its Year 11 students, from 2022. The SMC Foundation Diploma has been developed to meet the specific needs of our Year 11 girls, providing them with a strong pathway for both NCEA Levels 2 and 3, and the International Baccalaureate.

The SMC Foundation Diploma is the culmination of two years of research and development by our subject matter and assessment experts. It provides for increased teaching and learning time, a wide range of specialist subject options, and a tailored and rigorous assessment model incorporating a variety of modes of assessment. It is based on St Margaret’s College’s commitment to provide opportunities for holistic growth and wellbeing, with modules designed to strengthen character, service and leadership skills.

Sian Evans, Head of Senior School, who has led the development of the SMC Foundation Diploma, commented; “When girls leave our Middle School, and enter Year 11, they already have a strong platform of skills and knowledge, and a taste for a variety of specialist subjects. Our new curriculum will help our girls to continue on this path, challenging them to achieve more, and to engage in activities that prepare them to be successful in Years 12 and 13, and for the rigours of life beyond our school gates.”

Diana Patchett, Executive Principal, said; “We are proud of the academic success our girls achieve year after year. As an independent school, we have the flexibility to choose our own curriculum to best meet the needs of our girls. The programme our teachers have developed is based on educational best practice and research driven change, and represents a key element of our continued commitment to supporting our girls in preparing them to pursue their post-school aspirations with confidence.”

St Margaret’s College was one of the first schools in New Zealand to offer the dual academic pathway of NCEA Levels 2 and 3 and the International Baccalaureate, and has a proud tradition of educational innovation. Learn more about the SMC Foundation Diploma here.
