St Margaret’s College’s Paterson Lodge, within Arthur’s Pass National Park, has been used and enjoyed by many past students and is the perfect location to enjoy some of New Zealand’s most spectacular landscapes. Today the lodge is much the same as when opened in 1970. It is warm and dry and set up with a kitchen, bathroom, bunkrooms for 15 and a common space.
Located on the northern second terrace of the Waimakariri and Hawdon Rivers, near the Hawdon Shelter and campground, the lodge has basic utilities such as a water supply, an internal enclosed fire heating with wetback, a four-burner gas stove, a bathroom with two sinks, a shower and a flushing toilet.
There are three bunk rooms with 15 single bunks in total each with a mattress and pillow, and a common room adjoining the kitchen area. Bring your own sleeping bags or sheets and blankets. The kitchen is equipped with cooking and eating equipment, including pots, pans, plates, cups, cutlery etc. There is a bank of four rustic long drop toilets outside. and there is a small wood storage shed nearby. Water supply is piped from a perennial spring to three storage tanks above the lodge then gravity fed back down. The water supply is not treated and the water supply is shut off in winter to avoid freezing damage to the pipework. There is also a water tank next to the lodge with a tap that supplies water all year round. Wood fuel and axe are stored in the woodshed very close to the lodge.
Fire safety instructions and equipment are up to standard. Cell phone coverage is marginal but better nearer to Castle Rock or Arthur’s Pass Village.
There is a well equipped first aid kit and spare matches. You will need to bring your own lighting, such as portable rechargeable lamps, and head torches as well as warm sleeping bags and blankets. There is no refrigeration so bring chilli bins and ice for perishables. Also, toilet paper, a lighter and fire starters, water containers and fold-up chairs are recommended.
