Centre stage at prestigious drama festival

Date: 13th April 2022

Congratulations to the two St Margaret’s College teams who did us proud at the regional Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival.

This is New Zealand’s most prestigious drama festival, and SMC has an almost unbroken track record of recognition over the past decade. Numerous SMC students recognised at the awards have gone on to perform at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London.

This year Chloe Taylor was named Best Student Director. She also won plaudits as the director of Romeo and Juliet which was awarded Best Use of Silence.

Yasmin Marsh and Emma Cawood won Best Onstage Connection. Their scene from ‘King Lear’ also won Best Overall Five Minute Scene which means they will represent Canterbury at the National Festival in Wellington later this year.

Caitlin Dufty was selected as the Canterbury Region Direct Entrant into The National Shakespeare in Schools Production for her outstanding performance of Juliet from our 15 minute scene from ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ This is an invitation to attend a prestigious week-long residential course culminating in a performance and the opportunity to be selected to join SGCNZ Young Shakespeare Company that will travel to the UK to perform at The Globe Theatre.

The outstanding achievements follow similarly stellar results last year when our girls won several accolades.
