Leadership and Peer Support

Leadership at St Margaret’s College is based on the underlying principle that prefects will be students who wish to give service to a specific area of school life. In doing so we are developing leaders to serve.

The Primary School appoints prefects in Year 6 to serve in the areas of culture, sports, the community and the environment. In the Middle School the Year 8 girls have the opportunity to become House Captains and Vice Captains. They are responsible for their House members from Years 2 to 8. In Year 8 and 9 girls can run for the Student Council to become their year representative.

Year 9 Leaders are appointed to hold portfolios in Environment Communications, Recreation and Media. In the Senior School the role of all Year 13 students is to assist the Leadership Team and staff to achieve the goals of the school. The senior students should lead by example to establish an environment that shows commitment, support, challenge, celebration, role modelling and personal excellence. Year 13 students also have the option of being Peer Support Leaders and Prefects. All leadership roles have very clear job descriptions and prefects each have key relationships and are responsible to key staff members and heads of departments.

From an early age we endeavour to inculcate a sense of community responsibility, a responsibility to serve and lead in the school environment. The leadership skills developed throughout their school years will empower our students to strive to become future leaders in the wider community.
