The Arts

extra_curricularAn Arts Education at St Margaret’s College will Engage, Excite and Enrich…’

The Arts programmes provided at St Margaret’s College are rich with passion and enthusiasm. The Head of Performing Arts, Michael Sharp, believes ‘we all have the potential when the possibilities are endless.’ The school offers a well-balanced and in-depth arts education in the primary, middle and senior years.

Dance is taught throughout the school as a compulsory component of the curriculum in Years 2 to 8 and as an option choice for Years 9 and 10. NCEA Level One, Two and Three in Dance Studies is offered for Years 11, 12 and 13. The school has a purpose-built dance studio where students from Year 9 to 13 study a variety of topics as part of the core curriculum or in one of the recreational dance programs run each day after school.

Drama is taught at all levels and students in the primary, middle and senior school all have opportunities to participate in performance. The school has a purpose-built little theatre for school productions and drama preparation for local and national drama competitions including the Sheilah Winn Shakespearean Festival and the Canterbury Theatre Sports Competition.

Music is offered at all levels and there is a thriving extra curricular programme. Students are encouraged to become involved in numerous choral and instrumental groups from primary through to senior school. A number of Rock bands are running within the school and there are combined orchestras and musical groups with Christ’s College. Individual tuition is available in a number of instruments and voice.

St Margaret’s celebrates the Arts during an Arts FocusWeek and many students are recognised and acknowledged for their achievements in the arts with Pocket awards and red Honours blazers for outstanding achievement in the arts.
