Science

academicThe aim of the course work in Science is to build on the natural curiosity and enthusiasm of each student, encouraging careful observation, critical thought and a deep understanding of core concepts.

Small science classes, a well resourced department and modern laboratories allow for students to do extensive individual practical and investigative work. Staff are experienced, well qualified and enthusiastic about science and are committed to ensuring that the students in their care achieve well.

The use of computers is integrated into the learning and teaching programme at all levels. Three classes at Year 9 work exclusively on laptops developing skills in science as well as enhancing their information and communication capabilities.

Selected on their performance in Y9 Science, capable Year 10 students are given the opportunity do a full course in NCEA Level 1 Science. In addition, St Margaret’s College is one of the few schools in New Zealand that offers full specialist courses at Year 11 in NCEA Level 1 Chemistry, Physics and Human Biology. The in-depth treatment of these subjects provides a solid foundation for further study and success in Y12 NCEA and in Y12 International Baccalaureate.

International Baccalaureate Science courses are studied over Year 12 and Year 13. Biology, Chemistry and Physics are offered at both standard level and higher level. The programme offers opportunities for scientific study within global contexts which stimulate and challenge students. Extended essays and group projects allow students to further develop their scientific skills.

The Y10 extension programme, specialist Year 11 courses, the International Baccalaureate higher level courses and NCEA Level 4 Scholarship ensures that students are particularly well prepared for success in professional science courses at a tertiary level.
