Mathematics and Statistics

academicBy studying mathematics, students develop the ability to think creatively, critically, strategically and logically, and to organize, process and communicate information. They learn to estimate with reasonableness, calculate with precision and understand when results are precise or uncertain.

 

Students in year 9 to year 11 are ability grouped to best meet their learning needs. Several courses are available at years 11 and 12 and are these designed to suit the ability level of the students. Each strand is pre-tested and learning programmes are developed to enable each girl to progress at an appropriate pace. Additional Maths Help is available during the lunch hour to meet the needs of individual students. Exploration and learning is supported by appropriate technology including graphics calculators, CAS enabled handheld technology and computers. The Mathematics Department has worked alongside a government pilot scheme to introduce new CAS technology and the staff have benefited from an extensive professional development programme.

 

Students who master level 5 of the Curriculum in year 9 may have the opportunity to enter NCEA level 1 in year 10 and level 2 in year 11. This is to best prepare students for the International Baccalaureate programme or if a student chooses to continue with NCEA, they may enter Statistics and Modeling in year 12 and Calculus in year 13. Additionally some students may enter the university mathematics course in year 13.
